One of the most common questions we hear at Manak Fitness is whether cardio or weights is better for losing weight. The honest answer: both play important roles, but strength training often delivers better long-term results.
What cardio does well
Cardiovascular exercise burns calories during the session, improves heart health and builds endurance. Activities like walking, cycling, jogging and HIIT increase your daily energy expenditure and support overall fitness.
What strength training does better
Lifting weights builds and preserves lean muscle. More muscle means a higher resting metabolism, so you burn more calories even at rest. During fat loss, strength training helps you lose fat while keeping muscle — giving you a toned, athletic look.
The fat loss winner: combine both
The most effective programs blend 3-4 strength sessions per week with 2-3 cardio sessions. Example weekly split:
- Monday: Upper body strength
- Tuesday: 30-minute brisk walk or cycling
- Wednesday: Lower body strength
- Thursday: Rest or light activity
- Friday: Full body strength
- Saturday: HIIT or outdoor cardio
- Sunday: Rest and recovery
HIIT vs steady-state cardio
High-intensity interval training saves time and boosts calorie burn after exercise. Steady-state cardio is easier to recover from and suits beginners. Choose based on fitness level, joint health and preference.
Do not out-train a bad diet
No amount of cardio fixes poor nutrition. Fat loss still depends primarily on calorie balance. Training shapes your body; nutrition reveals it.
